Ercol Furniture – upholster

Ercol Furniture was established in 1920 by Lucian Ercolani in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire manufacturing timber framed lounge furniture and occasional furniture. In 1944 Ercol was awarded a contract by the Government Board of Trade to produce 100 000 low cost spindled/bentwood framed chairs. This involved a process the company developed of steam pressing English Elm so the chairs could be assembled from pre-formed components.

In 2002 Ercol moved into a purpose built factory at Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire. The company has gone on to produce many award winning ranges of furniture. Like many western countries, the UK has in more recent years also had a reversion back to purchasing from local manufacturers.

A client from the Peel region approached us requiring a quote to have her Ercol lounge suite re-furbished. The furniture was originally purchased by her parents in the UK prior to her birth in Australia. There had been some rather amateur attempts to both polish and re-upholster this suite which has the effect of adding to the work involved.

We removed all the upholstery and stripped back the lacquer to bare timber. The frame was then stained a mid-tone walnut and coated with three coats of 30% gloss lacquer. Quality seat webbing was then fitted and then we fabricated premium foam cushioning laminating it with bonded polyester fibre. We disregarded the old cushion covers and made new patterns bringing everything back to original with a blue tone fabric featuring a wide abstract diamond pattern being selected by our client.

When delivering the furniture the look on our client’s face said it all, she simply said “Amazing!” This just reinforces our factory philosophy ‘work hard and enjoy the journey’.

  • Boans Furniture – reupholster

    The Boan brothers opened their first department store at Wellington Street Perth in 1895 then moved into selling furniture in 1912. After the First World War demand for furniture was strong so Boans commenced manufacturing furniture from a factory located corner Saunders and Glide Streets Perth. The range of furniture made was extensive from cabinetry to upholstered furniture, mattresses and cane furniture.

    With the anti -Asian sentiment dominate during this period the Factories Act of 1904 forced Asian furniture manufacturing companies to stamp on their products “Asiatic Labour” and so Boans like many other local furniture manufacturers of time took advantage of this situation advertising that their furniture was made with “European Labour Only”.

    During the late 1960’s Boans started retailing furniture from other specialist manufactures and also started importing furniture. Boans remained dominate and indeed an iconic retailing business in WA for almost a century and was sold to Myer in 1986.

    We were approached by a mother and daughter who had fond memories of their lounge furniture purchased from Boans in the early 1960’s which was made under licence to Parker Knoll in the UK. The lounge suite had served the family well for almost 60 years however it was certainly due for re-upholstery.

    They selected a Warwick linen to replace the original Sanderson linen so the furniture would retain an elegant appearance in their sitting room. We completely removed all existing upholstery then rectified a few minor structural issues with the timber frames. The tension springs were replaced and the bodywork padding was replaced with high density polyurethane foam and the cushions were fabricated from premium foam and encased with bonded polyester. The linen was pattern matched, cut and sewn then upholstered to its original splendour.

    Transforming the Classic Jason Recliner

    Jason recliner chairs are an iconic piece of Australian furniture valued for their quality craftsmanship and durability, making them sought after to this day. This restoration aimed to preserve the chair’s structure for future generations to come.

    The Origin of Jason Recliners

    Jason chairs were manufactured under license from Lazy Boy in Munro Michigan. The factory operated in Welshpool WA from the mid 1960s through to about 1990. These chairs were known for featuring a very robust and unique mechanism. The business was owned and managed by the Bridge family with the chairs distributed around Australia and at its peak they were also exported.

    This is Our Restoration Process

    • The chair was completely stripped and the mechanism cleaned and lubricated
    • The show-wood rocker base and the turned wing sections were sanded and re-lacquered dark walnut
    • The back zig zag springs were linked
    • New hessian was layered over the seat springs
    • New high density padding was laminated onto the body
    • New polyester encased premium cushioning was fabricated and
    • The chair was then re-upholstered to the same finish in an English Heritage Linen
    This chair was also of sentimental value as it previously belonged to our client’s father. We wish her many years of memorable moments in this special chair.

  • Re-furbish Australian styled ‘Club Lounge’

    The Classical Club Lounge

    What we generally recognise as Australian styled ‘club lounges’ were made from the late 1920’s through to the mid 1950’s. This design was not uniquely Australian however it was very popular during this era and the suite featured is typical of this period however many variations were available.

     These suites all featured the wide arms with timber trays and bases but some also decorative timber trim on the arm facings. The upholstery finishes were also available in a wide variation of finishes. This included cord trim, contrast piping and raised panel patterns on the backs.

    Our Client’s Request

    We were requested to completely re-furbish this ‘club lounge’ by a client who inherited this furniture from her parents but which originally belonged to her grandparents. This lounge suite was made in the late 1940’s and then re-upholstered in the 1970’s so it was in a dilapidated condition when received for refurbishment.

    The Reupholstery Process

    • We completely stripped the existing upholstery to the frame
    • The frame was well constructed using thick Jarrah timber
    • We screwed all the joints to eliminate any potential movement
    • We sanded back the timber arm trays and base blocks
    • Then polished the Jarrah leaving a natural finish
    • The suite was then re-upholstered using the traditional jute webbing, coil springs and hessian for the seat and back bodywork
    • For comfort and practicability we then use premium cushioning for the base, back and arm overlays also polyester encased premium seat cushion inserts.

    Combining the traditional and modern upholstery techniques gives an authentic finish but provides practical and comfortable seating.

    In rejuvenating this classic Australian styled ‘club lounge’ our clients will be able to cherish their family memories into the future.

  • Our Refurbishing of T.H Brown chairs

    The History of Thomas Howard Brown

    Thomas Howard Brown formed T.H Brown during 1911 in Adelaide. The brand became a household name in furniture during the first half of the 20th century being one of Australia’s largest furniture manufacturers by the 1920’s and producing its two millionth chair by the 1940’s.

    Thomas’s son Peter joined the business after his return from WWII and went on to develop some of T.H. Brown’s most iconic pieces of furniture. Peter and his brother Napier ran the business until 1987 when T.H. Brown was sold to Work Space Commercial Furniture.

    Thomas’s grandson Simon joined the business in 2015 and formed a joint operation to re-launch some of T.H. Brown’s mid-century signature pieces.

    Our Client’s TH Brown Chairs

    Our client has a classic mid-century home and wished to furnish it appropriately. She had acquired a substantial range of pre-loved furniture from this era over several years and we were fortunate in been given the task of restoring these pieces.

    The Reupholstery Process We Undertook

    One of our tasks was to restore a set of six T.H. Brown dining chairs.

    • We carefully stripped these chairs down
    • Due to the quality of construction few repairs were required
    • The chairs were then carefully sanded back
    • Three coats of clear lacquer were applied being sanded back between coats
    • The frames were then gently rubbed back with super fine steel wool to enhance the matt finish required
    • We then laminated the seat ply panel with high density premium padding and
    • Upholstered the seat with a classic mid-century textured velvet.

    This beautiful mid-century furniture was completely rejuvenated to its bygone glory days and our client is now living out her dream.

  • Refurbish TV Chairs & Daynite sofa

    “TV chairs” and “Daynite sofas” became popular from the late 1950’s and remained in production through to the early 1970’s. This coincided with the introduction of television and the modern appliance age. Today we generally refer to TV chairs and Daynite sofas as mid-century furniture which has regained popularity amongst novices and enthusiasts of this era. This furniture setting was made in W.A. by Condor Furniture in Osborne Park owned by the Trethowan family.

    This set of TV chairs and Daynite sofa were presented to us by our client who wanted them completely refurbished to original condition. The existing upholstery was striped to the frames then the frames sanded back to raw timber. The timber frames were constructed from Nyatoh, a Malaysian timber which is ideal for this type of furniture. The frames were then stained brown teak and three coats of clear lacquer applied.

    The new upholstery started with replacing the no-sag springs then fabricating polyester encased premium cushion inserts. The upholstery fabric selected was similar to the original covering being a flat woven rust coloured fabric.

    The result was a refurbished classic mid-century lounge setting that took our clients back to the time of their initial purchase. We have no doubt that just as nostalgic memories will be relived good times are still to come for our clients to enjoy their furniture.

  • Upholstery Up-cycling

    Over the decades we have found considerable change in consumer sentiment towards reducing waste and up-cycling furniture. This tends to mainly occur with furniture that is built to last but the design has become out dated over time. Unfortunately lower quality furniture after several years of use ends up on verge collections, unnecessarily depleting resources and contributing to the landfill problem.  

    A client approached us with a Moran sofa-bed she had purchased many years ago as a student as she required both a sofa and some were to sleep. This was well constructed and the bed action was very good condition warranting re-upholstery.

    We completely removed the existing upholstery and laminated new high density foam padding to the frame body. Then fabricated new polyester filled channelled and quilted back cushion inserts and new polyester encased premium foam seat cushion inserts. The upholstery finish was modified deleting the skirts and replacing them with piped borders. The result was a smart contemporary sofa-bed which will function for another few decades.

    We were also approached by a senior citizens home with quality furniture however it had become outdated over time and was also looking slightly tired. We suggested the settees could be re-styled with some cosmetic changes to the upholstery.

    The settees were stripped to the frames then new heavy grade elastic webbing fitted and high density foam laminated to the body work. New channelled and quilted polyester filled back cushion inserts were fabricated and polyester encased premium foam seat cushions were also constructed. The main change in the upholstery was the deletion of skirts which was replaced in the front by a padded piped border with the outside arms and backs also then lined and padded providing a plush finish. The previous fabric was a striped satin weave and was replaced with a fresh looking abstract floral in a flat weave. The clients were elated with the result!
