The Decision to Reupholster a Velvet Chair

Getting Our Professional Opinion

Our Perth client originally purchased this Molmic ‘Francisco’ chair in 2009 and contacted us about reupholstering her special chair. Upon inspecting the velvet chair we reassured her that this was of superior quality and certainly worthy of re-upholstery. Her intent was to re-upholster the chair in a contemporary velvet similar to the original covering but more subdued. Quilted velvet is presently in vogue and it was these ranges that caught her eye and the particular velvet upholstery fabric was selected.

How We Refurbished the Lounge Chair

The original upholstery fabric was removed revealing a well-constructed timber and ply frame sprung with linked heavy gauge zig-zag springs. The chair had been well used over time so the seat cushioning was replaced with bonded polyester wrapped premium foam. The existing back cushion was preforming and so also laminated with bonded polyester. The upholstery cutting was concise as the fabric was a quilted square design ensuring a symmetrical finish. Another production test was the concave back being upholstered in a square-line fabric, the finished appeared balanced.

The Result – a Very Special Velvet Chair

This Australian made chair proved to be a good investment for our client as when we lovingly re-upholstered it fifteen years later, it looked and performed like new. We expect her to have another fifteen years of comfort in her special velvet chair.

  • Highly Professional and Helpful

    The History of Artifex Australia

Artifex Australia was founded in 1978 by Nick and Diana Moniodis in Perth WA. They retired in 2015 selling the business to Michael D’Andrea who retained their manufacturing base in Perth. Since commencing operations Artifex has gained a reputation for manufacturing superior contemporary upholstered furniture and supplying top-end retailers who cater to discerning clients. In recent years Artifex have also diversified into high-end commercial furniture and project upholstered furniture.

    Our Client’s Story

Our Claremont clients purchased their Artifex chair about 20 years ago from a respected Perth furniture retail store. This contemporary wing-back chair was one of the most popular Artifex designs. Our clients still admired their chair, however it had become slightly worse for wear. The approached us wanting their chair restored to new. They also wanted the same or a similar fabric to be used in the furniture reupholstery process.

The Steps Taken in this Chair Restoration

We removed the original fabric revealing a well-designed and constructed timber and ply-wood frame requiring no attention. The elastic webbing was replaced also new premium foam polyester encased seat, back and arm cushion inserts. The original upholstery fabric was the renowned Warwick ‘Macrosuede’ being still available, so a similar colour was selected. The chair was re-upholstered to an original finish featuring top-stitched detail.

Chairs Restored to Their Former Glory

Our client were thrilled when seeing how we had reupholstered their beloved chair. Especially as we were able to reupholster it in the same upholstery fabric – it was like turning back the hands of time.

    Old leather lounge Perth
    Reupholstered leather lounge Canning Vale

    Background Information

Leather Interiors were a dominate up-market leather furniture retail store based for many years in Hay Street Subiaco. They manufactured a substantial amount of the furniture they sold.  They also purchased a significant amount of furniture from other leading Perth leather furniture manufacturers.

Clients Request for Leather Sofa Repair

Our client contacted us saying they purchased two leather settees from Leather Interiors in 2003. She explained that the sofas received constant heavy use and were overdue for re-upholstery. Our client had decided on selecting a Tasman Tanning leather for their sofas.

    The Leather Reupholstery Process

    First Steps

These 2 ½ seater settees had indeed seen heavy use however the furniture seemed in good structural condition. We removed all the existing upholstery. We stripped the settees down to the frames which were constructed from Jarrah and plywood. No structural work require was required.

    Webbing and Foam Upgrades

New seat and back heavy grade elastic webbing was fitted then high-density foam was laminated to the arms and frame bodies including the outside arm and back panels which were lined and padded. Polyester filled channelled and quilted back cushion inserts were fabricated. The premium foam polyester encased seat cushion inserts were fabricated by laminating two grades of foam creating a cushion that progressively firms and ensuring greater longevity.

Time for the Tasman Tanning Leather

The leather selected was Tasman Tanning ‘Settler Amber’ being a beautiful traditional full-aniline leather. This was upholstered using large panel cuts meaning no sub-panel joins were required and it was top stitched to the original finish. The general finish reflects both the care that we took with patterning the job, our detailed sewing and upholstery skill.

The workmanship on this job spoke for itself and we know the reupholstered sofas will be enjoyed by the family for another twenty-two years.

  • Reupholstering Hans Borg Lounge Furniture

    Authentic Hans Borg Furniture Perth

The History of Hans Borg Furniture in Perth, WA

Hans Borg Furniture was a Western Australian furniture manufacturer operating from a factory in Bassendean. Hans Borg Furniture produced bedroom, lounge, dining and occasional furniture from the mid-1960s through to around 1980. The brand became known for its Scandinavian-influenced designs with clean lines and solid construction.

Today, original Hans Borg pieces are still found in Perth homes, making them ideal candidates for high-quality restoration rather than replacement.

This original maker’s mark on the furniture confirms the authenticity of the suite we restored.

Storm Damage to a Classic Perth Home

We were contacted by our client’s nephew after a severe storm caused the lounge room windows of a large 1970s clinker brick home to blow in.

The home featured a classic sunken lounge room, where the Hans Borg suite took centre place:

    • 2 x armchairs
    • 2 x three seater lounges
    • Large 4 piece sectional ottoman

Unfortunately, the furniture sustained extensive glass and water damage, requiring a complete rebuild.

Rather than replacing the suite, the family after obtaining several quotes for their insurer, chose our business to restore these original pieces for two reasons. One because of our attention to detail in the quoting process. The second reason was because they trusted us.

The Process for Fixing the Hans Borg Furniture

Stripping Back the Furniture to the Frame

The first stage involved carefully stripping the furniture back to its original structure.

    • All existing fabric, padding and internal materials removed
    • Water-damaged chipboard panels replaced
    • Timber frames inspected and retained due to their excellent condition

This highlights the benefit of well-constructed mid-century furniture, where the original frames are often worth restoring.

    Rebuilding Comfort and Support

With the frames prepared, we rebuilt the internal structure to ensure long-term durability and comfort.

    • Heavy-grade elastic seat webbing fitted
    • Outside arms lined and reinforced
    • High-density foam body padding laminated

We then fabricated new cushions, including: polyester-filled, channeled and quilted back cushion inserts and premium foam seat cushions with polyester wrap.

Reupholstered Hans Borg Arm Chair Perth

This stage demonstrates the level of detail involved in professional furniture reupholstery by our Team at Parker Interiors. Where both internal structure and external finish are critical to the final result.

Fabric Selection and Staying True to the Original Design

The client wanted to maintain the original look and feel of the Hans Borg suite while refreshing the overall finish.
We worked closely with them to select a suitable fabric, ultimately choosing Zepel Baron Emerald.

This provided a close match to the original upholstery in both colour and texture, ensuring the finished suite remained true to its mid-century Scandinavian style.

For more examples of similar projects, see examples of our other pieces of furniture we have restored.

The Finished Hans Borg Lounge Suite

The completed suite has been fully restored and is once again the focal point of the home.

    Why Clients Choose Parker Interiors

Our client obtained several reupholstery quotes through their insurer and ultimately selected Parker Interiors due to our attention to detail and clear communication throughout the quoting process.

Most importantly, they trusted us to deliver the right outcome.

  • Upcycling Sofas Perth

    old furniture perth
    upcycled furniture perth
    reclaimed furniture perth

Upcycling furniture as with many other product lines has evolved from a trendy bohemian life gesture into a mainstream way of living. For Parker Interiors this is reflected in sales as when we commenced operations in 2006, 70% of our production was new furniture and 30% restoration. Now in 2024, these figures have completely reversed. The types of upholstered furniture being upcycled have also evolved which is interesting.

Several decades ago in the early stages of furniture upcycling upholstered antique furniture would be stripped, the show-wood frames would be brightly lacquered and the furniture re-upholstered in varied bright remnant fabrics. The next up-cycling stage was the refurbishing of 1930’s to 1950’s club lounges. These designs were almost unique to Australia and it became fashionable for the young professional class to have club lounges restored to their individual requirements. The following restoration phase is mid-century furniture which is presently huge and likely to continue for many years. Those having mid-century furniture restored are the inheriting grandchildren in their twenties setting up homes to the aged original purchases who still admire the beauty and practicality of this furniture.

The enquiry commenced with a phone call from our clients almost on the eve of Christmas requesting a quote on the re-upholstery of a pair of settees located at a Salvos furniture Perth. However, we understood our clients had serious intent as they had already selected a fabric so we met them at the charity shop with a sample of their selected upholstery fabric. The settees were inspected and quoted upon sight then we were asked to transport them back to our Canning Vale factory.

In the New Year we removed all the existing upholstery on this old furniture pieces and carried out minor structural adjustments to the timber frames. New turned legs were also acquired and stained to client requirements. The reupholstery commenced with heavy quality elastic webbing fitted to the seats and backs then high density foam laminated to the frame bodies. Premium foam was fabricated to form the shell backs as well as cylindrical arm and seat cushion inserts. The inside backs with the cushions were all then laminated with bonded polyester fibre.

The upholstery fabric was cut with great attention to pattern matching given the fabric concerned was a bold pattern. We worked through the upholstery process on the two settees simultaneously guaranteeing an identical finish with piped detail. This included lining and padding the outside back panels also trimmed with piping.

The reclaimed furniture looked more tailored than the original upholstery finish and the result was spectacular. The settees were brought back to life in a bold majestic way but still retained the essence of their reproduction art-deco design. This is upcycling in the truest sense and we trust this luxury furniture will be enjoyed for many years.

    • Thanks Frank for you and your team’s professional approach and investment in quality

What started out as a routine drop of some charity goods at our local Salvo’s, has ended up in a lifetime investment into beautiful unique furniture that we will treasure forever.  We both found the unusually shaped twin settees quietly awaiting their new owner on a quiet weekday morning just before Christmas 2023 and fell in love with them, but they needed some help.  “Who will you get to do it?” I asked.  “Well”, she answered in response, “I’ve been following Parker Interiors who are really adept at performing restorations and who do a fantastic job of it” – she knew exactly who to call.

And she did, Frank Parker was phoned with a photo of the settees as we stood in the shop.  We arranged to meet Frank on site (at Salvo’s) only a day later after we had secured the settees.  Frank had told us before we met that Warwick Fabrics was where to look and when we saw Warwick Flower Bomb (Violet) there could be no other choice – to match the TV wall in our under construction home and to allow us to use other accent colours to complement.  He was bang on time on the day, and showed us samples of fabrics and we quickly confirmed our choice, and he also went to great pains to explain exactly what restoration he would need to do and what it would cost, but no pressure.  Frank promised to check over the frames, change the feet, bolster some of the foam padding and above all returned our newly found treasurers given a new life.

From December to late February our settees received their new start in life.  Frank held them over in his factory a limited time after they were completed while we awaited our new home to be handed over, so we could deliver there.  Nothing seemed to be a trouble. And it was well worth the wait, what a result – we are so happy with them and they will be a family treasure!

Thanks Frank for you and your team’s professional approach and investment in quality.  We value the great experience we had and thoroughly recommend your service, with its accompanying care and artisanship to others in a similar situation as we were in.  We are convinced that Parker Interiors will apply these values restoring anyone else’s furniture and once again granting them renewed and enhanced lives.

  • Leather Couch Reupholstery

    leather couch reupholstery Perth
    Leather sofa reupholstery Perth

Leather Interiors Subiaco, were a dominant up-market Perth furniture retail store situated in Hay Street Subiaco for many years. They manufactured ranges of their own leather sofas and chairs but also bought from other local manufacturers a significant amount of leather furniture.

Our client had purchased a 3 seater leather sofa, 2 seater leather sofa and leather chair from Leather Interiors in the early 2000s. This lounge suite was upholstered in a good quality semi-aniline leather however it had received heavy use in a family room setting and was certainly due for replacement leather. We recommended to our clients leather reupholstery with the same type of leather as it is ideal for heavy everyday use.  They selected the Futura ‘Lena’ range, from one of the world’s finest tanneries.

    • We disassembled the leather lounge furniture and removed all existing upholstery.
    • The timber bases were sanded back, stained then three coats of lacquer applied.
    • The frames were then reinforced with corner blocks and re-webbed with superior quality elastic webbing.
    • The outside arm and outside backs were lined and high density foam laminated to the frame bodies.
    • Polyester filled channelled back cushion inserts were fabricated then secondary quilted back cushion inserts to provide a durable and fine finish.
    • Premium foam polyester encased seat cushion inserts were also fabricated to provide years of comfortable and durable seating.

The leather hides were cut allowing for large panel cuts being just single body joins for each seating unit. Incorporating large panel cuts provides a superior finish than internal panel joins but may increase leather usage and the joins were saddle stitched to replicate the original finish. With the leather correctly cut and sewn the upholstery is streamlined giving the leather chairs and sofas a smooth elegant finish.

This was indeed back to the future with the original finish not just replicated but improved. Our clients were elated and we trust this leather furniture upholstery repair will be enjoyed for many years to come.

  • How We Reupholster Catt Furniture

    Perth Reupholster Catt Furniture

A Background of Charles Catt & Son

Charles Catt was a cabinet maker who emigrated from England with his family to WA in the early 60’s however his son Roy emigrated some years later having completed his diploma at the London. The business Charles Catt & Son was established in the mid 60’s with their first factory in Belmont then shifted to a large factory in Willetton in the early 70’s then finally moving to their purpose built factory in the mid 80’s at Canning Vale. Catt became renowned for designing and manufacturing premium quality contemporary Jarrah furniture including dining, cabinetry and lounge. The business went into receivership in the early 90’s due to a combination of high overheads and a declining market.

    Details of the Catt Furniture

Re-upholstering these Catt ‘President’ dining chairs takes time as attaining this style requires considerable engineering. The chair is constructed utilising a fibreglass shell with a hollow Jarrah pedestal base containing a centre threaded spine.

Our Step by Step Reupholstery Process

We re-attached ply pieces for fixing the outside back and laminated new premium padding to the fibreglass shells. To acquire the complex curves requires shaped borders for the fitted upholstery then just the slow task of finishing the outside backs. The chairs are finally carefully re-assembled applying the correct tension to the threaded spine enabling the swivel action.

    A Happy Ending

By rejuvenating these iconic 70’s chairs this family will be able to enjoy using them into the future.
