Our Clients’ Favourite Two Moran Chairs

A local Perth client approached us who had acquired quality pieces of furniture during the 1960’s and 70’s but was having to downsize and could only take her favourite two Moran chairs purchased new in 1972.

The Moran Furniture Story

The Moran story started with John Moran completing his upholstery apprenticeship then starting John Moran Furniture in 1950 at his mother’s garage then shifting to a rented factory. Moran Furniture grew over the decades providing furniture for several generations of Australians.

The Steps for Repairing These Chairs

These Moran chairs were worthy of complete reupholstery as the frames were sturdy and the sprung edge was in good condition. The original upholstery was stripped to the frame and the rejuvenation process began by doing the following:

  • new jute webbing
  • hessian
  • high density foam overlays
  • polyester encased premium cushion inserts

The result is these two luxurious chairs are in new condition ready for many more years of enjoyment.

    If this was your chair, you may be be thinking where can I get my chair reupholstered? Would you believe that this chair is only two years old and looks like it has been in a war zone. It is well constructed however unfortunately it was covered in a polyurethane fabric which has been affected by hydrolysis. This is when body oils and perspiration leach between the top polyurethane film and the backing fabric resulting in delamination.

    This has been a continual problem for many decades with laminated polyurethane fabrics. The manufacturer, import wholesaler and retailer could only be labelled as blissfully ignorant if they were unaware of this issue.

    We recommended to our client to reupholster this chair in the most durable upholstery fabric. For this we chose a commercial grade synthetic suede which will last for many years. It cost the client approximately 60% of the initial purchase price. This highlights the necessity for retail staff to be adequately trained and the necessary enforcement of consumer law. In this case as with so many, the client was left holding the baby while the supply chain were left holding the profits.

    The History of These Upholstered Library Chairs (William IV Chairs)

    A set of two leather look library chairs were presented to us by a gentleman who wanted them rejuvenated. These chairs were purchased new in the 1920’s by his grandfather in England. “Library” chairs also referred to as “William IV” chairs were initially constructed in the 1830’s thus this design of chair had already been in circulation for almost a century.  

    Library Chair Details

    These chairs were constructed from English Oak and traditionally upholstered in a tapestry fabric. They had then been re-upholstered in the 1970’s using a Nylex vinyl named “Deerhide”. Deerhide was a product of its day and although extremely popular, perhaps these chairs deserved to be covered in something slightly more elegant.

    How We Beautifully Restored These William IV Chairs

    We stripped these well worn chairs completely back then cleaned and polished the elegant carved timber frames. We used the original upholstery methods. This included jute webbing, coil springs and stitched edges and indulged in a final thin layer of premium foam. The upholstery was also finished to the original standard with space studded self-covered banding.

    This resulted in this pair of two library chairs being brought back to their former glory and a very happy owner.

    The History of Arthur G Furniture

    Arthur G was established in 1979 Arthur Georgopoulus having initially commenced leather sofas in the garage at the family home in Melbourne. Today Arthur G has a large manufacturing operation in Huntingdale. His son Leonard joined the family business in 2008 with the focus then changing to direct sales. Arthur G now has showrooms in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. 

    How We Reupholstered This Piece of Arthur G Furniture

    It’s always a pleasure to re-upholster high quality Australian made furniture. The Arthur G furniture pictured was only about 10 years old however our clients were shifting into a new residence and wanted their furniture re-upholstered to coordinate with the new décor.

    The Furniture Reupholstery Process

    We completely stripped down the existing furniture revealing solid Victorian Ash timber frames and quality upholstery componentry. We encased the existing down/feather cushion inserts with bonded polyester providing a silky finish to the cushioning however there was no maintenance work involved. The settee was re-covered in a plush pink cut-pile velvet and the chaise lounge in Tasman ‘Matisse’ leather.

  • Re-upholster antique chair in linen

    The use of different upholstery materials can totally transform the appearance of a chair. You may have inherited a chair or just have seen an antique chair where you admire the design but have to use your imagination regarding a suitable fabric for re-upholstery which would suit your décor.  In this situation take your time to investigate the possibilities and possibly consult with an upholsterer experienced in this area of work.   

    A client came to see us from the South West farming town of Boyup Brook as they had inherited chair from the United Kingdom made in the 1880’s. This chair had sadly resided in their shed for many years and was in a dilapidated state having been previously in leather. They wanted this chair to be re-furbished for their bedroom so a Heritage Linen with a matching soft pink cotton velvet for piping.

    The existing upholstery was completely stripped to the frame then structural repairs carried out and the legs re-polished. We then fitted jute webbing, laced and tied down coil springs with hessian overlays. The shapes were then developed utilising modern polyurethane furniture edging instead of fibre fill stitched edges and premium high density foam instead of the traditional flock and fibre. We feel that using this combination of traditional and modern methods of building the upholstery foundation gives an authentic finish with superior comfort.

    The chair was then upholstered a high quality screen printed vat dyed linen with a matching pink cotton velvet piping. This gave a softer appearance to the chair which was required by our client. This chair having been constructed in the 1880’s was now rejuvenated by descendants of the original owners and functional in 2019!

  • Problems with re-upholstering your old lounge suite

    Fixing up a previous reupholstery job

    This modular unit was manufactured by a local Perth, business ‘Farmer Furniture’ in the early 1980’s. It was re-upholstered 12 years ago however the clients had never been happy with the quality of the reupholstery job as it simply “did not feel like the old suite when new”.

    How we approached renewing this lounge suite

    We stripped the old upholstery from the modular frame. It revealed that the second layer of fabric had simply been placed over the initial fabric in which the suite was made. This style of reupholstery is very problematic. The issue is caused by the webbing, body padding and cushioning not being replaced resulting in this lounge furniture quickly returning to a dysfunctional state. Which is a waste of time and money for the owners.

    The next stage involved us:

    This process allowed us to modernise the upholstery finish without losing the authentic character of the lounge suite.

    The final result was a well finished and functional modular lounge this family will enjoy for many years into the future.

  • Ramada Furniture – Reupholster

    Ramada Furniture commenced operations in the mid 1980’s and was owned by Graham and Justin Davies. Graham also owned Leather House a successful furniture retail business specialising in the sale of leather lounge furniture. His son Justine operated the factory in Canning Vale which took over a large purpose built factory from another lounge furniture manufacturer Stylecraft which had ceased operations.

    Grahame Davies sold Leather House in the early 2000’s and Ramada Furniture was subsequently sold to Lawrence Barnard. Lawrence also owned Featureline which locally manufactured more budget priced lounge furniture. He then operated the combined businesses wholesaling lounge furniture to the WA retail trade.  However due a changing market and the onslaught of inferior but cheaper imported lounge furniture the combined business failed after about 3 years.

    A couple approached us who were renovating their home which required updating their furniture. They were however mindful regarding waste and wanted to up-cycle as much as possible. They had purchased Ramada two leather lounge chairs and a footstool about thirty years ago which were looking seriously dated and if possible wanted them rejuvenated in fabric.

    We completely removed the existing upholstery from the two chairs and footstool then started the re-upholstery process fitting new heavy grade elastic webbing. High density foam was then laminated to the frame bodies and new polyester encased premium foam cushion inserts were fabricated. The lounge furniture was then carefully re-upholstered to original finish except the seat cushions were now reversible.

    Our clients were absolutely delighted with the result of their up-cycling. The chairs and footstool have again taken pride of place in their renovated upstairs sitting area.
